The state of tennis received a mixed report in the annual 2011 survey commissioned by the TIA and USTA, with stable numbers in participation and frequency of play, but the results also suggest there still are areas that must be addressed.

Late Season Court Activity Monitor Shows Gains

In all four categories—New Players, Total Courts Used/Booked, League Play and Tournament Play—more tennis facilities noted an increase than a decrease during the late season of 2011 (July to end of September), according to the 2011 TIA Court Activity Monitor, which surveys 500 facilities across the country.

Retail Effort Behind 10 and Under Tennis Ramping Up

In addition to the changing competitive landscape for 10 and Under Tennis, the initaitive is having and will continue to have a significant impact at the retail level. In the past 12 months, the USTA has met with a number of mass merchants and chain retailers to share their aggressive plans for marketing 10 and under tennis. With the rule change and the significant consumer marketing the USTA has planned, these meetings have resulted in more of these large retailers carrying 10 and under tennis products and helping to promote 10 and under tennis to their consumer traffic.

TIA Benchmark Surveys Need Your Response

Specialty Tennis Retailers Show Positive Third Quarter in Tennis Racquet Category

As the outdoor tennis season comes to a close in many regions the country, tennis specialty retail stores in the 2011 third quarter have sold nearly a quarter of a million racquets, a 3% increase over Q3 of 2010, according to data collected by the TIA.

Survey Points to Gains for Cardio Tennis Facilities

Cardio Tennis has seen tremendous growth since it was created and launched by the TIA in 2005, with now more than 1,700 Cardio Tennis sites in the U.S. According to a Physical Activity Council report earlier this year, Cardio Tennis grew by 28 percent in 2010, to more than 1.5 million participants.

Pro/Specialty Retailers Seek Higher Awareness Among Consumers

Pro/specialty retailers feel the tennis player and consumer is not fully aware of the importance of pro/specialty retailers in delivering valuable service to tennis players. In a “Quickpulse Survey” by the Tennis Industry Association, that was the No. 1 concern cited by pro/specialty retailers.
