Tennis Gets Boost in Palm Beach Newspaper

July 16, 2010 · No Comments

Tennis in the Palm Beach area got a boost through an article in early July in the health section of the Palm Beach Post newspaper. Staff Writer Steve Dorfman wrote that tennis is the country’s fastest growing participation sport, and pointed to initiatives by the U.S. Tennis Association and Tennis Industry Association as helping to push tennis along.

More than 31 million Americans play tennis, according to the most recent participation survey by the TIA and USTA. Dorfman pointed out that major manufacturers also have contributed to the recent increase in participation by devoting resources toward growing and promoting the sport.

“Part of tennis' appeal is that it's a sport the whole family can share for a lifetime,” Dorfman writes. “These days, I see the same scene repeated, and even surpassed, at bustling municipal facilities such as the Delray Beach Tennis Center. There you can find players from 8 to 80 partaking in the numerous physical and psychological benefits the game offers.”

Dorfman continues: “I was struck by how many valuable life skills can be developed, and reinforced throughout your lifetime, by playing tennis: learning to minimize mistakes by staying within your abilities, managing adversity and stress, dealing with pressure, controlling your emotions, dealing with the unforeseen and the uncontrollable, implementing strategy, planning countermoves, being gracious in victory, defeat and while competing.”
